Overcoming Food Addiction - How to Lose Weight and Beat the Cravings

By Rita Wings I am a food addict. In this era, I don’t think anyone would advise an alcoholic to drink only in moderation. Yet, as a food addict, that type of advice comes at me constantly from doctors, media, and friends. I have had to learn on my own that if I want to maintain a healthy weight, I can never eat certain foods again. Millions of people can drink in moderation, but alcoholics know that no matter how much they crave it, one drink can ruin their lives. With our epidemic of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and obesity we may have to realize that even moderate quantities of addictive food can be harmful, nevertheless, millions of people can and do eat ice cream, pizza, and fast food in moderation; I can’t. For a long time, I tried to cling to the belief that I could. Berating myself for my lack of will power was preferable to facing a future filled with only low-cal, low-carb food. A life of steamed veggies seemed like a steep, endless path of craving and self-denial. Fortunately, the reality of my ’sobriety’ is definitely not the uphill grind that I imagined. Just as alcoholics have impaired judgment when they are drinking, I was sadly lacking the ability to judge what life could be like without my fix. I don’t mean to trivialize the difficulty of this feat though. Unable to find a program that took the addictive nature of certain foods seriously, I decided to create one for myself. I compare this to trying to self-manage an alcohol detox while living in the backroom of a bar. I failed many times, but kept trying. In the face of intense cravings, I had to find and eliminate my trigger foods. At first, the constant pull of my addictions made it hard to be honest with myself about what those were. Many foods claiming to be healthy or good for dieters turned out to be on my list of foods that make me hungrier or that I can’t stop eating once I start. I’ve found it extremely challenging to cope with the total profusion of addictive food and the advertising for it. I had to purge my house of unhealthy choices and try to find ways to gather with family and friends that don’t revolve around food. I videotape all the television shows that I watch and zip through the commercials to avoid seeing all those juicy food close-ups, but even that doesn’t help eliminate the scenes in the shows themselves where the characters chow down on all my old favorites. By far, though, the most challenging thing has been discerning the foods I can eat safely. Whether by accident or by the food industry’s design, the very foods that have been most helpful to me are the most maligned. Try this experiment: Casually drop into a conversation that you had lunch at McDonald’s–no reaction, right? At most, if you’re very overweight, you’ll get a look. Now, drop into a conversation that you eat nuts or avocados. Chances are your audience will be immediately compelled to warn you about their high fat content. Just like putting money in a vending machine that pops out a programmed product, put nuts or avocados into a conversation and out pops a programmed high fat warning. Eavesdroppers have even run from the other side of the room to join the chorus of those trying to make me understand the folly of my ways. I have lost over 80 pounds in less than a year while eating as much as I want of fresh avocados, raw unsalted nuts, and virgin olive oil in my diet. Perhaps the food industry doesn’t want us to know that all fat calories are not created equal. It’s definitely in their best financial interest for us to overeat addictive fats, and, when we stop, to become so fat-deprived that we must once again become enslaved consumers. This would explain the vilification of high quality fats that help create and maintain a healthy weight loss lifestyle, and the glorification of non-foods like diet soft drinks that destroy it. Once I eliminated addictive foods, including all sugars, refined flours, prepared foods, and chemical additives, and replaced them with excellent nutrition, including high quality oils, fresh veggies, beans, whole grains and 3-5 quarts of filtered water a day, the strong physical cravings passed quickly. They return now only when I make a mistake in my diet. The emotional cravings still plague me occasionally, but not nearly as much as I feared, and the freedom and joy I feel with the monkey off my back are much more than I dared hope. If you are a food addict like me, don’t believe anyone who tries to sell you on a so-called easy diet that allows you to eat all the foods you love. Don’t believe it even if it seems to work for your unaddicted friends. Trying to maintain the delusion that you can just eat smaller portions of foods that have you hooked perpetuates the agony of cravings, and dooms you to repeated failure. Independent Review Organizations and The Appeals Process

While state and federal regulations dictate in large part how these appeals are handled, each healthcare payer has much leeway in determining exactly how to deal with them. Many companies have first-level appeals or second-level appeals that are done inside their own organization and use the IRO as a third-level appeals entity. Other healthcare payers actually send all of their appeals directly out to IROs immediately as their first-level response. Some payers use the IROs determination as binding upon their decision making process as a matter of best practice. Other health insurance payers consider the IRO independent medical review to be another input to the decision making process but reserve the right to make a final determination in house. So, health plans use IROs differently to satisfy regulatory requirements. IROs represent a very flexible approach capable of being used and deployed no matter what the healthcare payers internal process may look like. We have clients that perform some first-level appeals internally and others automatically send those same types of cases from the same health plans out to us. This level of flexibility and adaptation on the part of the independent review organization is what makes IROs so appealing to health insurance payers: They can be flexibly deployed around just about any type of process both internal and external. In almost all states, state insurance commissioner organizations have set up processes whereby any patient who has been denied a benefit by their health plan and has gone through an appeal can then appeal to the state insurance commissioner. The IROs render independent medical review determinations and responds directly to address any concerns that patients might have directly to them. This consumer advocacy element is an important part of the checks and balances that we have in our health care system. A Gift From the Heart of a Friend

By Steve Brunkhorst She stares at me and then closes her eyes. A tinge of early dawn plays on her cheek as it peeks through the glass curtains by my desk. I grow warmer, waiting in silence for her first uncertain word and the gentle touch of her hand. She fidgets and rocks in her chair. She cannot hold her thoughts inside much longer. We’ve been meeting like this for months. Some days she rambles, pouring out her soul. She talks of yesterday’s sorrows and tomorrow’s distant shores. She tells me her needs, desires, dreams, and passions. Sometimes she teases me with impossible notions that she only wishes she believed. When she’s feeling light, she weaves amusing tales and tells me jokes. I accept her as perfect always perfect as she is. Finally she opens her eyes, and a tear drop falls. The emotions are about to flow. “Okay,” she whispers under her breath. I see her desperation and project my own inner light toward her. Her eyes glow with expectancy. She pours out her soul and discovers buried treasures. She paints a portrait of her father and rehearses what she will tell him after all these years. She’s filled with hope that he will finally understand. Her spirit lifts. My mind dances furiously recording her thoughts and prayers. Perhaps if she explains honestly, he will listen, and they can finally heal the relationship. Today she isn’t muddling in the past. She is moving forward. Today is a new beginning. She connects with the core of her being and pauses briefly to reminisce. She plays with a vivid memory, and more tears come tears of joy. She pauses again, and I wait. I grasp every privileged thought and confession. Her emotions rush like unrelenting rivers until she’s quiet, still, and at peace. She whispers, “There’s nothing more to say now.” She asks me to remember her most secret longings, to guard them like precious mysteries. Again, I do. She leaves feeling lighter, at ease, and confident. Will she call him or write to him? I won’t ever ask, and she will tell me when the time is right. Sometimes I wish I could feel emotions like she does and tell her what to say that would make everything alright. But I will not interfere. I have no delicate heart like hers only a large and finite memory to preserve her most endeared treasures. Winning Marketing Surveys

Here are ten time-tested tips that will dramatically improve your survey results: Clearly define the surveys purpose. Usually surveys are conducted to gain information that will help make better decisions. What decisions do you hope to make using the survey results? What other goals will be met by conducting the survey? If your survey is used to collect information to assist you in your marketing efforts, clearly identify your marketing goals. Also, have specific plans for how you will use the data once it is collected. Use surveys that are brief and highly focused. It is usually better to conduct a narrowly focused survey rather than a master survey covering many objectives. The best surveys take less than ten minutes to complete. A five minute survey focusing on information that will improve decision making is even better. Research shows that participation in surveys lasting more than ten minutes falls off dramatically. Include your most important questions and avoid those that are merely nice to know. Keep your questions simple. Simple concise questions are easier to understand and take less time to complete. Avoid jargon and acronyms. Make questions specific and direct. Avoid open-ended questions that lead to reader confusion or doubt. Use closed-ended questions. Closed-ended questions require specific answers or choices. Closed-ended questions can usually be answered with yes, no, or perhaps from multiple choices. Open-ended questions usually invite unique respondent answers. These qualitative answers might be helpful, but they require more time, are usually less precise, and are much harder to correlate. Keep rating scale questions consistent. Rating scales can be a useful way to collect and compare sets of data. In order to gain the respondent’s confidence and to avoid confusion, it is important to use consistent rating scales. If you use a 1-5 rating scale to indicate worst to best, or weak to strong, use 1-5 with directional consistency throughout your survey. Avoid higher rating values or reversing scale direction. Order surveys logically. If possible, keep your survey questions in logical order. It will help the respondent. It helps to include a brief introduction, including the purpose of the survey. Proceed from there to the broader-based survey questions. Follow with questions that are narrower in scope. Demographic and sensitive data should be collected near the end of the survey. If you need contact information, request that last. Conduct a trial run. You can avoid lots of mistakes and snags by pre-testing your survey on a sample audience or on co-workers. Use your test audience to make sure that they properly interpret your questions and that they complete the survey in the desired time. Consider your audience when sending out survey invitations. Be sensitive to busy times of year or upcoming holidays. If your survey is targeted at employees, send the survey during business hours. Of the business days, Monday and Friday are statistically proven to be better days for respondent to receive surveys. Consider sending reminders to prospective participants. Reminders may not always be appropriate, but they can be useful to help potential respondents remember to complete the survey. Lets face it. Potential participants are busy with priorities that they find more important than your survey. One or two reminders indicating why the survey is important might significantly boost your results. Offer an incentive. If appropriate and available, consider offering incentives. Most people like the idea of being rewarded for investing their time in a survey. Well-conceived incentives can boost survey results by as much as fifty percent. If you use incentives, make sure they are appropriate in value and type. Inappropriate incentives can lead to undesirable participation and respondent fabrication of survey responses. Write down approximate time (or time interval) of meals in these columns. For example, if a hungry day in your office preceded too abundant supper at home, which you cannot forgive yourself, take something on work with you tomorrow. For each day you lived the right way, each reached goal, each correct thought, definitely! Invent gifts beforehand, and do not give up until you get what you want. 8. Move Although somehow!
